The raccoon is a very distinctive animal with their trademarked black mask and heavily furry ringed tail. They are commonly referred to as the “Masked Bandit”. Adult raccoons are stocky mammals generally weighing between 10 to 35 pounds, and are 2′ to 3′ in length. They are omnivorous and excellent climbers with their dexterous fingers. Raccoons are nocturnal so they sleep during the day. Raccoons usually leave behind plenty of signs of their presence. Tracks often turn to smudges when the animals climb up downspouts. If you see a raccoon active during the day, DO NOT approach it, call Weaver’s Wildlife Control immediately.
Raccoons can become a nuisance in many ways. They will raid unsecured trashcans, steal pet food left outside and damage fruit and vegetable gardens. Damage raccoons cause to your home can be incredible. Raccoons cause sheetrock, roof, shingle and other structural damage. In many urban and suburban areas raccoons learn that uncapped chimneys make adequate substitutes for traditional hollow trees for denning sites. Typically in the spring, Weaver’s Wildlife Control gets calls from people complaining of raccoons in the attic. This is primarily when raccoon babies are born. The female raccoon can be very aggressive while “nesting” newborns. After raccoons have resided in the attic for any period of time, insulation damage is common. Loose fill insulation will become matted with fecal matter and urine and become compressed. This allows heated air to escape into the attic in the winter and hot air to enter the home in the summer, not to mention a huge health risk.
Raccoons are associated with rabies and raccoon roundworm (Baylisasacris). Droppings from a raccoon are infested with this raccoon roundworm and is considered a biohazard. Coming in contact with infested droppings or breathing in the dried roundworm eggs poses a serious health risk for both people and pets. Raccoon roundworm can cause blindness, brain damage, and death. Weaver’s Wildlife Control can effectively trap, remove and control problem raccoons in the most humane way possible.
